Where a shepherd used to be

A poem for weary sheep

As fields turn to stony ground,
Overgrown wool clings to skin and bone,
Wandering within the silence,
Where a shepherd used to be.

The sheep have grown weary,
As drought gave way to dry riverbeds and thirst,
Hooves split deep and eyes grown shut,
Standing in the silence,
Where a shepherd used to be.

The sheep have grown weary.
As the days grew short into cold, bitter months,
Lost lambs abandoned to hungry wolves,
Scattered to the silence,
Where a shepherd used to be.

The sheep have grown weary.
Crying aloud for their Shepherd to lead them to safety,
Where grass is lush and water pure,
Grazing on the valley,
Where the Shepherd restores them to be.
